Chlorella vulgaris is a green algae first described in 1890 by the Dutch microbiologist Martinus Willem Beijerinck. The name Chlorella is derived from the Greek word ‘chloros’, meaning green, and the Latin suffix ‘ella’ refers to its microscopic size.

More precisely, it is a single-celled microalgae that grows in freshwater, it has been present on earth since the Precambrian period, 2.5 billion years ago. Spherical in shape, it has a diameter of between 2 and 10 µm.

It appears as a single cell or it is capable of forming colonies of up to 64 cells.
